Complete Guide to Choosing the Right Walking Aid: Cane vs Walker vs Rollator

📅 Feb 2026⏱️ 12 min

Choosing the wrong walking aid can make balance worse. This guide explains canes, walkers, and rollators - when to use each, proper sizing, and Medicare coverage.

Quick Decision Tree

Good balance, minor support needed: Single-point cane ($20-40)
Moderate balance issues: Quad cane ($30-60)
Need significant support, can lift walker: Standard walker ($50-100)
Need support but can't lift walker: Wheeled walker ($80-150)
Need support + want to walk longer distances: Rollator with seat ($100-300)

Proper Sizing is Critical

How to measure height:

  1. Stand in normal shoes
  2. Arms relaxed at sides
  3. Top of cane/walker handle should be at wrist crease
  4. Elbow should bend 15-20 degrees

Wrong height = back/shoulder pain + fall risk

Medicare Coverage

Part B covers 80% if:

  • Doctor writes prescription stating medical necessity
  • Purchased from Medicare-approved supplier
  • You pay 20% coinsurance + Part B deductible

Typical out-of-pocket: $10-60 for basic models
